Congraturations - Eli colby

Byron Bay takes league title - From Byron News

Local junior, Eli Colby, who was chaired off the field by his mates and who was a ballboy for the 1996 grand final, described the win as a "big effort".

As a player, Nathan Cross kicked a winning field goal to win a premiership for Byron Bay at Red Devil Park in 1996.

As a coach, Cross was on the sideline late on Sunday afternoon to watch an action replay of that day as halfback, Jared De Thierry, calmly potted a field goal to give the Red Devils a 25-24 win over Grafton Ghosts to claim the Retravision Northern League premiership.

And amazingly, the field goal came at about the same time in late extra time as Cross's winner - and from nearly the same spot.

"It was the same end of the field, at the same minute," said an elated Cross in his first year of coaching. "As a coach, I can't go through too many more of them."

The Red Devils raced to an 18-6 lead in the first half thanks to two tries from flyer, Tom Merrit, one from De Thierry and one from Alex Butschies, and looked like they would coast to a grand final win.

But a couple of costly mistakes and an interruption to the game brought about by an ugly brawl which spilled into the in-goal area in the south-eastern corner saw Ghosts get back into the game and go to the break only two points behind at 18-16.

With Grafton Ghosts players heading for the sheds with their tails up and the Bay players going in with their heads down, Cross told his players to keep "grinding it out" in the second half.

And that's what they did, with captain and player of the match, Ben Hill, leading the way.

The Devils scored first in the second half with Tobin Cupples diving on the ball after Ghosts defenders missed a high bomb.

Ghosts responded with a converted try and a penalty goal to lock the scores and put the game into 20 minutes of extra time.

Field goal hero, De Thierry, said he was "so happy for the boys."
